Part 1: Weapons, transportation and space exploration
Ever since the beginning of time, mankind wanted to accomplish two things. Swim like a fish and to fly like a bird. Within the past 100 years, mankind has not only accomplished this dream, but has excelled to expand with the launching of nuclear weapons from submarines and creating transportation vessels that are able to explore the reaches of space.
Mankind’s curiosity to explore the unknown has become an obsession and this obsession has driven mankind to become more creative, test the limits of science and invent new technology that will alter the future forever.
The advancements in technology have been inspired by the study of engineering. This study has created a new breed of engineers that has pushed physics to the limit and has ultimately created the advanced engineer.
The advanced engineer assumes a new role in society. They no longer just create inventions, they invent technologies that are artistic, attractive and efficient. They are the new inventors that pave the future through creativity and perseverance.
Many of my students ask what is expected of them once they complete their undergraduate studies. This is a very broad question and in today’s article, we are going to dive deep into some of the expectations and skills that are expected and how to succeed in the modern day engineering industry.
Let us consider a formula 1 driver. The success of winning a formula 1 race depends on how well the driver is able to control the car and how well each member of the formula 1 team performs. The analogy is applicable to the advanced engineer. Computer programs are the computational vessel while the engineer’s inputs and interpretation of the computer generated results are the driver that will make the project a success.
So when students complete their undergraduate degree, there is a high chance are that they will be required to utilise computer programs within their day to day functions.
So are you brave enough to ask the question many never ask? Have you ever asked, “How accurate is the computational calculation produced by a computer program and how accurate are the inputs before running a computer simulation.” Asking this one question already sets you aside from the rest of the crowd.
This drive in curiosity will drive you to question thought process and apply judgment to every design that uses such a computer program. So when using a computer program, perform the following tasks:
